Sports Connect CIC is using the power of football to bring communities together, offering a lifeline of support to refugees and asylum seekers living in East Kent. 

For several months, Sports Connect CIC has been supporting weekly football sessions for residents of Glenwood House in Margate, a local accommodation facility for asylum seekers. These sessions are more than just a kickabout – they have become a vital space for friendship, fitness, and community connection. 

“The weekly sessions provide an opportunity for the guys to relax and have fun,” says Derek Harding, founder of Margate Phoenix “Many of them have been on traumatic journeys, and the uncertainty whilst waiting for the outcome of their asylum claims can be very stressful. Football gives them the opportunity to forget about their problems for a few hours. The sessions also give them an opportunity to be part of the local community. Playing football with some of the local players allows them to make friends and connect locally. This is one of the most important aspects for the participants.” 

Over time, the impact has been clear. Confidence has grown, friendships have been formed, and some residents have even gone on to join volunteer programmes and training opportunities, opening new doors for the future. 

The initiative also underlines the importance of community solidarity. Many of the residents of Glenwood House face deep uncertainty about their futures, while also dealing with the trauma of leaving families and homes behind. The football sessions offer respite, structure, and a reminder that they are valued members of our community. 

Derek has seen the benefits first-hand through the targeted community project, supported by the Kent FA, Kent and Medway Violence Reduction Unit, and Social Enterprise Kent. He praised the partnership: “Through these sessions, we’re building something quite special. The guys have the chance to exercise, stay fit, and perhaps most importantly, feel that our community cares about them. Sport has a unique ability to connect people, and this project is a perfect example of that.” 

Sports Connect, works across Kent to use sport as a tool for positive change, continues to grow its community programmes, ensuring that everyone no matter their background, has the opportunity to feel included, supported, and inspired. We are proud to have secured funding from Thanet District Council for the 2025–26 season. This support means we can build on our work locally and are excited to see the project make a real difference in the months ahead.
