Sports Connect Community CIC is celebrating after key members of its team were recognised at the Thanet Community Champions Awards. The event, held on Wednesday, March 12th, was hosted by Thanet District Council in partnership with Social Enterprise Kent, honouring individuals and organisations making a real difference in their communities.

Sports Connect were delighted that both Connor Clarke and Lisa Sparkes were named as Thanet Champions, alongside 31 other winners. Lisa’s outstanding contribution was further recognised as she was awarded the title of Thanet’s “Community Champion” and received the prestigious Health and Wellbeing Award. Her work has been instrumental in fostering community engagement and educational opportunities, providing young people with pathways to brighter futures.

In addition to this recognition, Sports Connect recently received a grant from Thanet District Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. This vital investment has enabled expansion of their work in supporting young people through positive activities and community engagement. A key development has been the establishment of the Margate Education, Health, and Activity Hub at Northdown Family Hub, providing a central space for local initiatives.

Beyond the hub, project funds have been extended into other community projects across the district, allowing Sports Connect to deliver valuable outreach work. The initiative also aligns with the priorities of the Kent and Medway Violence Reduction Unit and local childhood policing teams, ensuring a comprehensive approach to youth support and community safety. The new hub has also enhanced access for a range of services, broadening the reach and impact of Sports Connect.

Sports Connect extends its gratitude to Thanet District Council and its partners for their support and recognition, reaffirming their commitment to creating meaningful change in the community.

From Volunteer to Coach: Connor’s Inspiring Journey with Sports Connect

Where do we begin?

At Sports Connect, we believe in inspiring, motivating, and educating individuals by providing opportunities that empower them to improve their lives. One of the best examples of this mission in action is Connor’s journey—a story of growth, resilience, and success.

Spotting Potential

Connor was first noticed by Sports Connect coaches at the Chill Club, a community centre, back in February 2024. Even if he didn’t fully recognise it himself at the time, his talent for football was clear. However, like many young people, he went through a period of uncertainty and disappeared from the sessions for a while.

But Connor wasn’t done yet.

A Return with Purpose

He resurfaced at a Sports Connect Open Day, eager to learn more about the programme. From that point on, he became a regular at our sessions, particularly at the Newington Chill Club. Despite balancing college commitments, he was keen to be involved, taking on a leadership role in organising events and team activities. His drive and commitment were unmistakable.

Stepping Up as a Leader

Recognising his potential, Sports Connect offered Connor a voluntary coaching position. He embraced the opportunity, supporting the planning and delivery of both indoor and outdoor sports activities. In addition to his college studies, he dedicated time to obtaining coaching qualifications, demonstrating his passion and dedication to helping others.

Connor’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. He took part in our Open Days, started his FA Playmaker course, and consistently showed exceptional leadership skills. His ability to assess and respond to young people’s needs made him a fantastic role model for children in our programmes.

The Impact of Connor’s Work

Connor’s contributions have left a lasting impact on both his peers and the young people he coaches. The feedback about him speaks volumes:

  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Strong rapport with peers and leaders
  • Keeps the group engaged and on task
  • Reflects and improves constantly
  • A professional, helpful, and respected role model

The team have described his support as invaluable, and everyone at Sports Connect is thrilled to have him around.

A Well-Earned Promotion

Connor’s dedication has now led to another milestone—he has been offered paid employment as an Assistant Coach! This achievement is a testament to his hard work and the journey he has undertaken with Sports Connect.

Connor, congratulations! Your story is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, support, and the right opportunities. We can’t wait to see where your coaching journey takes you next.

Lisa’s Impact: A Champion for Community Wellbeing

A Passion for Change

Lisa approaches every project with passion, bringing people together and promoting wellbeing. Her work has created impact-driven programmes that make a real difference in the community. While we could highlight countless examples, here are three key projects that showcase her dedication and success.

Empowering Young Women

Lisa spearheaded a project supporting 16 to 17-year-old females, providing them with opportunities to meet guest speakers, attend professional women’s football matches, and go on enriching trips. As a result, one participant has gained employment as a sports coach, while five others have become volunteers—proof of the tangible impact Lisa’s work has on young people’s futures.

Mentorship and Legacy

Lisa developed the ‘Thanet LEGENDS’ group, designed to offer mentoring and volunteering opportunities to women, helping them gain sports coaching and mental health qualifications. Additionally, she organised a memorial tournament for Sarah Johnson, ensuring her family and local community could come together to celebrate her life and legacy.

Protecting Vulnerable Youth

Lisa has forged partnerships with the Violence Reduction Unit, the District Council, and local policing teams to support children at risk of exploitation or criminal activity. She works in some of the most challenging environments, building relationships and providing safe spaces and positive activities that steer young people away from danger.

Celebrating Their Success

Lisa and Connor may work in different roles, but they share the same mission—using sport and mentorship to change lives. Their dedication embodies the spirit of Sports Connect, proving that one organisation can create lasting impact in so many ways.

Congratulations to Connor on his new role as Assistant Coach, and congratulations to Lisa for her incredible community leadership.
